Hello one and all!
The Solomonari were wizards from Romanian folklore, who wielded tremendous arcane power, and it is said to have caused blizzards and thunderstorms. They also had great authority over the cloud dragons. The Solomonari were most certainly based on mythologized versions of the Kapnobatai, a caste of ascetic shamans who were revered in Thracian and Dacian society.
Solomonari: Dragon-Riding Wizards
If a child was born with a placenta fused to their head, then they were destined to become one of the Solomonari. When they reached the age of 7, a Solomonari would take them to the Scholomance, the school of magic located at the ends of the earth. For 13 years the apprentice would work to learn all the languages of the world, all the magical incantations and then write all of his knowledge in a book.
These masters of the arcane were usually described as tall red-haired men with bulging eyes. The Solomonari could be recognized by their white garments, an inventory of magical items and an axe (that served as their wand). With the axe they could summon hailstorms, or when it was thrust into the ground it could serve as a lightning rod. They also carried their tome, that contained all of their knowledge, and a piece of wood that was used to summon the spirits of the wind. The reins of birch bark that they carried with them were used to tame the cloud dragons. According to folklore, the wizards could also live for many centuries.
These wizards had a dualistic nature. At times they were good and in other instances they were a bit wicked. Often they disguised themselves as beggars to test the kindness of the people. If the population refused to help them, they could bring down strong storms and hail to ruin crops. When they were aided they offered gifts to the rivers to appease the water spirits.
Most of the time the Solomonari were hermits, who inhabited isolated areas or lived in the Otherworld. At certain points of time the wizards would appear in their true form atop a cloud dragon, accompanying the vengeful spirits of murdered children.
Thank you for reading!
