Hogwarts Houses

Hello one and all!

One thing that has really been fascinating to me is how fans of Harry Potter have felt ownership of their specific house and how they feel a connection with. In this post I'm going to discuss the different houses a bit and find out why people are so vocal about it.

I will just give some background on the four houses of Hogwarts. Gryffindor, the house that Harry Potter is sorted into, has a lion on its emblem and scarlet and gold as its colours. Its values are chivalry and bravery. Slytherin, the house that Draco Malfoy found himself in, is represented by a snake and its colours are green and silver. Slytherin's values are ambition and cunning. Ravenclaws have an eagle on their breast and its colours are blue and bronze. This house's predominant values are intelligence and knowledge. A famous Ravenclaw is Gilderoy Lockhart. Lastly, Hufflepuff's animal is a badger, with the colours being yellow and black. The house is known for loyalty and patience. Cedric Diggory was a Hufflepuff.

A reason why a a particular house is so important to a fan is that humans love to have a special identity. The houses are perfectly suited, as each one has colours, a badge, motto and traits that are associated with them. This gives a fan an identity within the wider community and a feeling of belonging to something greater than themselves. It could also be that a lot of people do not even choose their house, a sorting hat does that for them. There are numerous sorting hat quizzes and games on the internet, and there is also the official Pottermore sorting hat. Because people do not choose it, but it's chosen for them based on their answers, they feel that their choice of house says something about them, what they are really like. Discussions can become quite heated because you are defending your group of people that, allegedly, are just like you.

And what house am I? The sorting hats always puts me in Hufflepuff.

Thank you for reading! Hope you have a great day!
