Creative Inspiration

Hello one and all!

Sometimes you encounter things that bring about a titanic shift in your writing. That has definitely been the case these last few days. I've been learning so much and and reassessing what it is to write by learning at the feet of  a master.

You can only be the best version of you. There are struggles but you have to keep on going, and know that you have something unique to give to the world. As a writer I really hold onto a certain quote of Martha Graham,  the American dancer and choreographer. The words below:

There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. ... No artist is pleased. [There is] no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.

- The Life and Work of Martha Graham (1991) by Agnes de Mille, p. 264

It is not our business to rate our talents in comparison with other's! We can only keep on doing what we love with a passion, work at it and stay true to ourselves. If we keep that channel open then we can create something that is a representation of our souls. That "blessed unrest" keeps us marching forward and we have to harness it.

This is something we can apply to creative ventures and life in general, I think. There is only one of us and by letting this expression flow out of ourselves we are giving a gift to this world . Keep creating in your own unique way.
