Cape Town in Brief

Hello one and all!

A lot of people ask me questions like "What is it like to live in Cape Town?" There are countless different experiences in countries that can vary depending on what region you grow up in. I'll try to articulate a tiny bit of what it is like to live here.

I grew up in Cape Town, one of the biggest cities in South Africa. It's a coastal city with a Mediterranean climate, so hot summers and super wet and windy winters. This is the Cape of Storms after all, and it usually does bring those. The sea water is super cold because Antarctica is just to the south, which is really nice in the hot summer.

The city is very spread out and only a small portion of the 3,7 million people actually live in the city center. It is mostly businesses there and most people live in the outskirts. Because of this layout, it has the worst traffic congestion in South Africa, and I can wholehearted attest to this. The slow moving lines of cars are torturous early in the morning.

In the city you can find a wide variety of cultures. You can find Malay food and then around the next corner there will be people having English high tea. The main languages that are spoken are Afrikaans (a language derived from Dutch), English and Xhosa. It truly is a cosmopolitan city.

The Kaapse Klopse is a minstrel festival that takes place every year on the 2nd of January. Thousands of colourful dancers and musicians take to the streets to bring cheer to the people. It is one of the biggest occasions of the year in the city.

There is so much more, but I'll have to leave it there for today.

Thanks for reading!
